Kombucha FAQs

What is kombucha?

Kombucha is a fermented, tea-based beverage made by combining brewed tea and sugar with a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast, commonly known as a SCOBY. This culture initiates a natural fermentation process, transforming the sweetened tea into a tangy drink with a distinctive flavour profile.

Thought to have originated in ancient China, kombucha has been enjoyed for thousands of years and has since spread across cultures worldwide. Its fermentation process creates a drink that contains organic acids, live cultures and various compounds produced as the tea transforms over time.

Today, kombucha is made both commercially and at home, with endless variations in tea types, brewing methods, and added ingredients such as fruits and herbs.

What do I see in my kombucha?

Our Kombucha is raw, alive, natural and unpasteurised. Therefore you may see deposits in your bottle. These may include kombucha culture, yeast strands and sediment. All completely normal, safe to drink and signs of a healthy kombucha!

Does You + I Kombucha contain alcohol?

Like most fermented products our kombucha contains trace amounts of alcohol. However, as it is such a small amount it is categorised as non-alcoholic.

Is your kombucha raw/unpasteurised?

Yes, our kombucha is 100% raw/unpasteurised.

Can I drink kombucha when pregnant?

We would advise that you consult with your GP before drinking kombucha when pregnant. Please note that our kombucha is raw/unpasteurised.

What is a SCOBY?

A SCOBY is short for Symbiotic Culture Of Bacteria and Yeast. It’s the living culture that ferments sweet tea into kombucha, a tangy, lightly fizzy, delicious drink!
